The channel is now measured. Guideline's Verified Ad Intelligence began capturing transaction-level ad spend on AI platforms including ChatGPT and Perplexity on 7 July — drawing on a dataset representing roughly US$200 billion in annual media investment across 65 countries (Guideline via PR Newswire, 7 July 2026). Independent benchmarking is the strongest signal yet that AI-assistant advertising has crossed from experiment to channel.
The revenue curve: OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026; media reports cited in Guideline's release put the pilot above US$100 million in annualised revenue within its first two months, with projections of US$2.5 billion in 2026 and US$11 billion in 2027. Treat the out-year figure as a projection, not a fact — but note that measurement firms are building infrastructure as if it lands.
The disclosure regime arrived first: Meta's "About this ad" rollout (from 1 June) auto-labels ads created or significantly edited with third-party generative AI, detected via industry-standard signals — advertisers no longer choose when the AI label appears (Meta Newsroom, updated 1 June 2026).
The Australian exposure: local influencer-led spend reached roughly A$800 million (+13 per cent) with more than half of deals now outcome-priced; retail media sits near A$1 billion growing 20 per cent-plus annually — the two local channels most exposed to AI-generated creative and AI-measured budgets. LinkedIn's five new AI Campaign Manager tools and Amazon's AMC extensions both landed this fortnight, pointing the same direction.
The desk's read: 2026's second half is when AI platform spend starts appearing in Australian quarterly plans with real numbers attached. The arbitrage window on early AI-assistant inventory is short; the measurement and disclosure infrastructure is arriving faster than the audience data. Position accordingly.
