OpenAI’s advertising business is on pace to miss the company’s own five-year revenue forecast by 90 per cent, according to Emarketer, which caps the entire US chatbot ad market at US$5.41 billion by 2030 — against the US$100 billion OpenAI has reportedly pitched to investors for itself alone.
OpenAI has projected US$2.5 billion in advertising revenue this year and US$100 billion by 2030 — figures first reported by Axios in April from the company’s presentations to investors, and never publicly confirmed by OpenAI — but research firm Emarketer says the numbers don’t survive contact with the market. Its new forecast, first reported by Adweek, has standalone chatbots — ChatGPT, the Microsoft Copilot app, Google AI Mode and Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping combined — generating under US$1 billion in US ad revenue in 2026, and roughly US$5.41 billion by 2030.
