Guideline has extended its Verified Ad Intelligence to capture transaction-level advertising activity on AI platforms including ChatGPT and Perplexity — the first independent read on whether AI-assistant ad businesses are performing to their own projections.
Advertising inside AI assistants just crossed a threshold: it's being measured like any other channel. Guideline — whose ad-spend dataset is built from agency billing systems and represents roughly US$200 billion in annual media investment across 65 countries — announced on 7 July that its Ad Intelligence now captures verified, transaction-level ad spend flowing into AI platforms, naming OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity.
The timing tracks the money. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026, and media reports cited in Guideline's release put the pilot above US$100 million in annualised revenue within its first two months, with projections of US$2.5 billion in 2026 growing to US$11 billion in 2027.
Guideline pitches the product at a specific gap: agencies, brands and institutional investors have had no independent way to check how AI platform advertising is actually performing against the numbers the platforms report. Transaction-level coverage promises verified advertiser spend versus self-reported projections, the velocity of AI platform ad revenue since launch, and forward-looking spend signals.
Why it matters: measurement follows money, and budgets follow measurement. When the firm that benchmarks agency spend gives CMOs a verified read on ChatGPT advertising, AI platforms stop being an experiment line and start being compared — against search, against social, against each other. For Australian media buyers, where Guideline's data (via its SMI heritage) already anchors market pacing, AI platform ad spend will now land in quarterly planning conversations with real numbers attached. Early-channel pricing rarely lasts; the arbitrage window on AI-assistant inventory is now officially on the clock.
