Streaming & FAST
Media & Channels
ABC Commercial has launched four free ad-supported streaming channels, ABC Entertains, ABC Everyday, ABC Factual and ABC Kids, on LG Smart TVs across North America, Europe, the Nordics and Singapore. The move takes Australian programming into the growing FAST market with no subscription or login required, and gives the public broadcaster's commercial arm new international ad inventory to sell.
ABC Commercial has rolled out four free ad-supported streaming television channels on LG Smart TVs, distributed through the LG Channels app in partnership with streaming infrastructure company Amagi. Availability differs by market: the United States gets ABC Entertains and ABC Kids, Canada adds ABC Factual, and viewers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Singapore receive all four channels.
The line-up leans on established ABC library content. ABC Entertains carries Australian drama and comedy including Aftertaste and Upper Middle Bogan, ABC Everyday covers lifestyle staples such as Restoration Australia, Back Roads and Gardening Australia, ABC Factual carries documentaries including AI vs Human: The Creativity Experiment, and ABC Kids leads with preschool series Reef School.
Brian Lee, sales manager for digital at ABC Commercial, said FAST is "a significant and growing area of business" for the division, describing the launch as a hybrid strategy combining linear FAST streams with curated on-demand libraries. LG's European content acquisitions lead Sabina McNally and Amagi's APAC business development director Tom Parsons both framed the deal as part of a wider push to stock free ad-funded platforms with premium broadcaster content.
The channels run on LG's webOS smart TVs released from 2016 onwards, with advertising funding the free access. Viewers need no subscription or login.
Why it matters for Australian media and advertising: this is the ABC's commercial arm building an ad-funded revenue stream offshore at a moment when FAST is one of the few growth segments in television advertising. For the local industry, it is a reminder that content libraries are becoming ad inventory, and that even a public broadcaster is now competing for CTV ad dollars in international markets. It also extends a pattern worth watching for Australian producers: FAST distribution gives Australian titles global shelf space without foreign sales deals for each program, which changes the economics of back-catalogue content. Australian advertisers do not get access to this inventory directly, but the deal signals where CTV supply is heading, and local FAST expansion tends to follow international proof points.
Worth noting for balance: neither ABC Commercial nor LG has disclosed revenue terms, audience projections or the ad sales arrangements for the channels, and FAST channel viewership for individual broadcaster brands remains modest compared with major SVOD services. The significance is directional rather than immediately material.
